<\/span>1. Most self storage facilities require that renters have insurance<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Most self storage facilities make insurance mandatory for their customers. This rule benefits both customers and facilities\u2013\u2013Facilities take precautions to ensure your things are well protected, using security cameras, controlled access, and making sure the units are clean and pest-free. However, there\u2019s always the possibility that unexpected and unwanted events can occur, so it\u2019s better to be fully covered.<\/p>\n

Self storage facilities do have insurance policies that cover their liability. If they\u2019re negligent and that causes damages to your belongings, they use their insurance to compensate you. Some policies provide coverage for your belongings while moving and while in temporary storage, but there\u2019s a time limit for benefiting of that coverage–usually no longer than one month.<\/p>\n

Usually, the cap for belongings kept outside the home will total about 10% of the policy\u2019s dwelling coverage. Ask the facility manager to explain their insurance policies. You\u2019ll want to know the risks and the possessions that are covered, to make sure it suits your needs. If you\u2019re not happy with the terms, you can keep looking for a better one with an outside source. But make sure you settle on a policy before you begin storing your things\u2014it\u2019s essential to have an insurance policy in place as soon as you begin using your unit.<\/p>\n

Evaluate your stored belongings properly and get an insurance policy that covers for their actual value. If you\u2019re planning to store high value property, such as jewelry, art, antiques or collections, it\u2019s a good idea to have them insured separately. The standard self storage insurance policy doesn\u2019t have a coverage limit that would compensate for such expensive items.<\/p>\n

The best course of action is to take your valuable items to be appraised by professionals, and then shop around for a suitable insurance policy to match. If you\u2019re going to store personal or business vehicles\u2014cars, motorbikes, etc.\u2014in your unit, double check if your existing car insurance or commercial vehicle insurance<\/a> covers them.<\/p>\n
