Hygge (pronounced HYOO-guh) has been defined in so many different ways, but all of them point to one commonality: finding cozy joy in the simple things. Hyggelig (pronounced HYOO-guh-lee) is the adjective that describes things which create the feeling of hygge. This philosophy which lends itself to feelings of comfort and well-being began in Scandinavia, but now it is known internationally. So, how can you put this into practice in the home?
Our friends over at Zoocasa have come up with some tips for how to inspire hyggelig bliss, and bring more comfort into your home, regardless of the season.
Hyggelig Decor
A great way to achieve hygge is by experimenting with a number of different textures, which can also be a fun way to transform your space. Choosing soft knitted or fur-like fabrics is an effective method for adding layers of comfort, and is highly in line with the principles of hygge. Incorporate these textures in a range of décor items throughout your space, from rugs to cozy throws.
You could also consider changing up your home’s lighting – often, default lighting can be on the harsh side, which seldom fosters feelings of coziness! Instead, try overhead lighting that’s less sharp, or forgo it altogether for candles, a fireplace, and even lamps. However, keep in mind that hygge favors natural lighting; try to maximize the amount your room gets by removing heavy or dark décor shades.
Hygge for All Seasons
While it may seem as though hygge is best practiced in the winter due to its warmth-promoting elements, there are a few ways to make it work in all seasons. One way is with an abundance of plants – incorporating them into your space enables you to connect with nature, another important hygge principle.
Hygge is also heavily centered on sentimental value, so be sure to include items that are important to you in the room, such as family photographs, to really tie the space together with meaning.
It’s also important to de-clutter, as having a fresh and clean space can do wonders to make your space both physically and mentally comfortable – even during the hotter months! This will help you to achieve the simplicity that is at the core of hygge.
Finally, consider hygge when choosing a paint color palette. Consider keeping things light with some neutral shades or choosing another color that you feel truly embodies the comfort that you are trying to achieve year-round.

Creating Hyggelig Spaces in Your Home
As shared meals are a central part of practicing hygge, try to create a space that facilitates this, along with comfort and unity. Think outside the kitchen and incorporate this into your other living spaces. Any items you have in those spaces could be moved into self-storage while you experiment with hygge.
However, if repurposing whole spaces is too much, focus instead on little hyggelig touches around the home. For example, section off part of a room or transform a pre-existing nook into a hyggelig space, the perfect place to snuggle up with a soft blanket, a hot drink and a good book.
While the general principles of hygge are all about the simple pleasures of life, deciding how to incorporate them into your space is truly about your personal preference. The key is to create a space that is warm while also encouraging serenity and unity. It’s just an added bonus that any improvements you make will make your property feel more home-like and better able to stand out among any houses for sale on the market.
