The bedroom is the space in your home where you spend most of your time–granted, a lot of that time is spent sleeping, but also relaxing, reading, and preparing for your day. Your bedroom needs to be airy and uncluttered, well organized, but also cozy, to facilitate all these different needs: relaxation, a good night’s sleep and getting ready in the morning.

However, you might want something more – the wow factor, that little bit of glamour that will turn it from an average bedroom into one that shows your personal style and preferences. Here are some simple, inexpensive bedroom design ideas that will add glamour and style to your bedroom without hurting coziness:

1. Focus on bedroom lighting

Good ambient lighting can truly elevate the atmosphere in your bedroom. Layer multiple light sources – from the central ceiling light and nightstand lamps to strategically placed wall lighting and even string lights for a romantic vibe. It’s a good idea to pick bulbs with warm light, as white, cold light might be too intense and too harsh for a bedroom.

2. Get rid of the furniture you don’t really need

You need breathing space in your bedroom – and one way to get is to get rid of any furniture you’re not really using. Whether it’s a bench seat that makes moving around the bedroom more difficult, an armchair that you never use, or an extra drawer chest, consider putting your extra furniture in storage. You could do the same with out of season clothing and footwear that you keep in your bedroom closet, thus maximizing the amount of space you have available in your bedroom. A small, 5×5 storage unit is the right size to hold some small pieces of furniture plus a few boxes of stuff.

3. Make your headboard really stand out

There are several options – an up to the ceiling headboard makes a great statement piece and gives that luxurious, 5-star hotel look and feel. Playing with textures is another way to go – you could take your headboard to the next level by reupholstering it using a luxurious piece of fabric. Or, if you prefer rustic or boho chic looks, you could go the other way and create a unique headboard using reclaimed wood, burlap fabric, or even the doors of a vintage cabinet. The main idea is to create a unique piece of bedroom décor, one that represents your personal aesthetic and truly stands out.

Although it’s not something you would normally think to add to your bedroom décor, a hammock can actually be an amazing addition – it’s comfortable and makes the perfect spot for reading and daydreaming. But it also creates that unique, unconventional atmosphere that takes your bedroom out of anonymity. Just make sure you ask for professional help when installing the hammock – it needs to be anchored very well into some durable beams; otherwise, you risk hurting yourself and damaging your walls.

5. Purchase high quality bedding sets

Let’s not forget the main purpose of your bedroom – to ensure a good night’s sleep. And you should pamper yourself with some high-quality bedding sets, not only to ensure restful nights, but also to elevate your bedroom’s look. Choose something with a high thread count – that’s usually the best indicator of fabric quality. Aim for a thread count between 300 and 500, and 100% natural fiber.

6. Pamper yourself with a standalone bathtub

A standalone bathtub is the ultimate luxurious bedroom accessory. It’s not a simple or easy to do addition. However, if you are in the process of remodeling your bedroom, and if you have enough space, consider installing a bathtub in your bedroom. It not only looks amazing, but it also gives a new meaning to “relaxing at home”: you’ll feel like going to the spa each day.

7. Decorate a wall with silk or satin wallpaper

Silk and satin wallpapers, with their shimmery, exquisite look, are an excellent choice in terms of bedroom decoration. Although it might be too much to use wallpaper everywhere, you could focus on a particular wall you want to enhance – for example, the wall behind your bed, or the wall you notice first when entering the bedroom. The colors and the prints are your choice, obviously, and must be coordinated with the rest of your bedroom décor. However, remember it’s a bedroom, and needs to be peaceful and tranquil, so try to stay away from very bold, very busy wallpapers.

8. Get a spectacular canopy bed

Louis XIV was a huge fan of canopy beds – and he knew a thing or two about luxury. So, why not treat yourself to a spectacular bed? In the past, these beds had practical functions – they were draped with heavy fabrics, protecting people from the cold during the winter and also ensuring privacy. Nowadays, they’re rather a design statement, but can also be useful. If, for example, you love sleeping with the windows opened, a canopy bed draped with fine mesh will protect you from bug bites. Whatever the appeal to you, canopy beds are both elegant and cozy, so they’re a great choice for your “wow” bedroom.

9. Create a mirror gallery wall

Instead of installing a single, large mirror, consider creating a mirror gallery wall – multiple framed mirrors of different sizes, displayed on the same wall. It brings a touch of style and classic elegance to your bedroom. As you’ll be playing with the size of the mirrors, get them in the same shape, and round mirrors look the best for this type of gallery wall.

10. Don’t ignore the ceiling

You can add some “wow factor” to your ceiling also. The easiest way to do so is by installing a glamorous chandelier – but there are other ways to adorn your bedroom ceiling. You could use wooden beams, install a coffered ceiling, or use special paints (gold, silver) and lacquer to create a dramatic effect.

And the most important thing of all – make sure that your bedroom décor truly reflects your personality and preferences, and it’s a space where you’re happy, relaxed, and comfortable.
