Many of us feel the urge to prepare our homes for the season ahead as soon as the first yellow leaves hit the ground. With days growing shorter, families spending more time indoors, and holiday gatherings appearing on the horizon, it’s only natural that we want our homes to be neat, tidy and comfy.

This fall cleaning checklist walks you through every space — from kitchen to closet — so you can declutter, refresh, and prep your home for winter with ease.

Infographic detailing fall cleaning steps

Start with a quick whole-home reset

Think of this step first step of the fall cleaning checklist as hitting the reset button on your entire home. It’s not about scrubbing every corner just yet,  it’s about swapping out summer for fall.

  • Let the sunshine in

Start with the windows: give them a good clean so the shorter days can bring in every bit of sunshine. If you’ve had heavier drapes hanging to protect you from the harsh summer heat, now’s a good time to switch them out for lighter curtains or sheers that let that golden autumn light brighten your rooms.

Go room by room and gather up the obvious summer stragglers, such as beach towels, picnic gear or camping chairs and either pack them neatly away or move them into a self storage unit located close to your home so they’re not eating up space you’ll need for winter coats and holiday decorations. Depending on how much you need to store, you’ll also want to think about the right self storage unit size for your situation. A few boxes of seasonal items might only require a small locker, while storing bulkier stuff could call for something larger.

  • Reset the mood

This is also the perfect moment to reset the atmosphere of your space. Swap out lighter throw pillows and breezy blankets for cozier textures like knits and flannels. Add a couple of candles or warmer-toned lamps to make evenings feel softer as the sun sets earlier.

Prep your kitchen for the holiday rush

The kitchen always feels like the heart of the home, but during fall cleaning, it deserves extra attention. It’s where pumpkins turn into pies, where big pots of soup bubble away on chilly afternoons, and where Halloween candy somehow keeps disappearing faster than you expect. With Thanksgiving dinners, football watch parties, and holiday baking just around the corner, now’s the time to give your kitchen some love.

  • Clear out the fridge and the pantry

Start by clearing out the fridge and freezer to make room for hearty leftovers and those giant turkeys that always take up more space than you planned. A pantry purge is oddly satisfying this time of year as well. Tossing expired snacks and donating extra canned goods makes way for spices, broths, and all the baking ingredients you’ll be reaching for soon.

You’ll thank yourself for scrubbing the oven and stovetop now, before you’re elbow-deep in pie crusts and roasting pans. Even the little things matter. Running a vinegar cycle through your coffee maker can give your morning brew a fresh kick, and wiping down small appliances makes the whole space feel brighter.

Cozy up your living spaces and bedrooms

Fall is the season of blankets, candles, and curling up on the couch, which means your living spaces and bedrooms deserve a little extra attention.

  • Refresh soft surfaces

Over the summer, carpets and rugs tend to collect dust, pollen and pet hair, so giving them a good shampoo or steam clean will make the air feel fresher once you’ve shut the windows for good. Sofas and armchairs also benefit from some TLC — a deep vacuuming and a quick flip of the cushions can make them feel almost new again.

  • Reorganize the closets

Closets are another spot that practically beg for a seasonal reset. Packing away sundresses, sandals, and shorts opens up space for chunky sweaters, boots, and coats. And as you rotate your wardrobe, it’s the perfect chance to donate anything you know you won’t wear again.

  • Swap out décor for cozier textures

Bedrooms, meanwhile, benefit from small but practical changes. Wash pillows, duvets, and mattress covers to clear out allergens and give everyone a fresh start for the season. Swapping out light summer bedding for heavier quilts or flannel sheets can make a big difference as nights get colder. In kids’ rooms, this is also a good time to clear out clothing that no longer fits and organize toys or school supplies before the holiday clutter starts rolling in. Even changing a few light bulbs to warmer tones helps bedrooms feel cozier and makes bedtime routines easier as the days get shorter.

Give bathrooms a seasonal deep scrub

Bathrooms may be the smallest rooms in the house, but they benefit greatly from a fall deep cleaning. Scrub the grout and tiles to bring back some shine. While you’re at it, don’t forget the shower curtains. Toss them in the washer or change them entirely to prevent mold and mildew from sneaking in.

  • Toss expired cosmetics and re-stock cold-weather essentials

Take a few minutes to clear out the medicine cabinet, too. Get rid of anything expired and make space for the cold-season basics you’ll probably need, like cough drops or pain relievers. Don’t skip your makeup and skincare stash while you’re at it.

Toss dried-out mascaras, old lipsticks, or anything that’s past its prime, then reset your routine for cooler weather. Fall air is drier, which means you’ll probably reach for heavier moisturizers, lip balms, and hydrating serums more often than your lighter summer products. Organizing these items now makes it easier to grab what you need when the weather really turns. And to top it off, swap in thicker, fluffier towels that make those chilly mornings a little more bearable.

Get the laundry room ready for the cold season extra work

The laundry room usually gets ignored but fall cleaning is a good excuse to give it a quick overhaul. Wipe down the washer and dryer, clear the lint trap, and run a cleaning cycle so your machines don’t smell funky when you’re washing heavier loads of blankets and sweaters. Stock up on basics now, from detergent and stain remover to dryer sheets. Between muddy soccer uniforms, Halloween costumes and holiday linens, you’ll go through more than you think.

  • Add extra storage to your laundry room

Make room for bulkier stuff too. Coats, scarves, and endless piles of socks have a way of landing in the laundry, so set up a couple of extra bins or baskets to keep it all under control. And if you want to make laundry feel less like a chore, throw in some fall-scented detergent or dryer balls with essential oils.

Keep the chaos out of the entryway

Nothing shows the change of seasons quite like the entryway. One day it’s flip-flops by the door, the next it’s muddy boots and wet jackets.

  • Contain the mess

A good doormat at both the front and back doors goes a long way toward keeping dirt and leaves from getting tracked inside. Make it easy on yourself by setting up a clear spot for dirty footwear. A simple rack or boot tray will stop the deluge before it starts.

  • Create a functional fall setup

As the weather turns colder, you’ll also want a grab-and-go spot for the extras: hooks or baskets for gloves, scarves, and hats save a ton of stress on rushed mornings. And if you live somewhere rainy (or snowy), keep an umbrella stand or a boot tray handy so all that water stays by the door instead of soaking into your floors.

Don’t forget to prep the outdoors before winter sets in

Man cleaning gutters

Most of fall cleaning happens indoors, but don’t forget about the outside of your home. Clearing gutters and downspouts isn’t the most glamorous task, but it saves you from clogged drains and ice dams once the temperatures drop. A quick yard cleanup — raking leaves, trimming back shrubs, and maybe planting a few bulbs for spring — helps your outdoor space ride out winter without turning into a mess.

With shorter days ahead, don’t forget the little things either. Swap out outdoor light bulbs so walkways and porches stay bright, which makes your home safer and just plain easier to come home after dark.

  • Store summer gear smartly

Then there’s all the stuff we use nonstop in summer but won’t touch again until next year. Patio furniture, gardening tools, and the grill need attention now if you want them to last. Give everything a good scrub and make sure it’s stored properly. Leaving them outside in the cold and wet will shorten their lifespan. And if your garage is already crammed full, this is where a self storage unit really pays off. It keeps bulky seasonal items safe, dry, and out of your way. The cost of renting a self storage unit hovers a little over $130 nationally but it can vary quite a bit depending on your actual location. For example, the average self storage unit in Chicago is slightly above that average, at $140 per month, while getting a storage unit in Omaha, NE will cost you just $98 per month. Consider safety and seasonal maintenance

No fall cleaning checklist is complete without a safety check. Once the weather cools and heating kicks on, the little things you do now can prevent big headaches later. Start with the basics: test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and pop in fresh batteries so you know they’re good to go. If you’ve got a fireplace, schedule a chimney cleaning before your first cozy fire. Soot and creosote buildup can be a real hazard if left unchecked.

Your heating system deserves a tune-up, too. Changing the air filter not only helps your furnace run more efficiently but it also keeps the air cleaner at a time when windows are mostly closed. While you’re at it, take stock of your emergency supplies. A fall storm or power outage is no fun, but it’s a lot easier to deal with if you’ve got flashlights, batteries, and warm blankets ready to grab.

Here are the top things to check off your seasonal safety list:

  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Schedule a chimney sweep or fireplace inspection.
  • Change HVAC filters and book a furnace or boiler service.
  • Restock emergency supplies: flashlights, candles, batteries, blankets, and a basic first-aid kit.

A quick run-through of these tasks gives you peace of mind  and a safer, cozier home  all season long. As winter settles in, you’ll thank yourself for tackling the work ahead of time and giving your home the seasonal reset it deserves.
