Remember that unopened LEGO Pirates Black Seas Barracuda set you received as a kid? It could now be worth a pretty penny — up to $6,000! And your childhood favorite Mario game, stashed away in storage, might fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on its rarity and nostalgic appeal.

Time has a funny way of transforming what seems like ordinary clutter into hidden treasures. Before jumping into your next big decluttering spree, slow down and take a closer look around your home — you might be sitting on valuable items without even realizing it.

As you sort through your belongings, don’t be quick to toss out seemingly worthless items. You might be amazed at how certain things have appreciated in value over the years and become unexpected assets. Here’s your opportunity to uncover hidden gems worth holding onto, turning yesterday’s clutter into tomorrow’s cash.

Trading cards

  • The One Ring Magic: The Gathering card sold for a staggering $2 million, making it one of the most valuable trading cards ever.

You might wonder how a small, colored rectangle can turn into a significant financial gain. The answer lies in the rapidly growing popularity of trading cards, a hobby that has steadily gained momentum in recent years. Driven by nostalgia and the desire for community, collectors are increasingly discovering that trading cards can be among the most profitable investments in the hobby world.

“What’s considered nostalgic or iconic in 10 to 20 years can dramatically change its worth. The trick is recognizing which trends will last and which are just hype,” says Josh Qian of Best Online Cabinets.

So, it’s worth dusting off that old binder tucked away in your attic and taking a fresh look at your forgotten collection. You might just uncover a hidden gem that you’ve unknowingly kept all this time. Much like a tsunami wave, a few trading card sets have seen a remarkable surge in popularity over the past few years.

Magic: The Gathering

No game has garnered more notoriety than perhaps the legendary “Magic: The Gathering.” With its famed Black Lotus card, it has become a cornerstone of the trading card industry’s explosive growth.

Even celebrities are jumping into the fray, with Post Malone buying an Alpha Black Lotus card for a whopping $800K in 2022. And he didn’t stop there, as the following year, he made another significant purchase, spending $2M on The One Ring card. This unique find was made by a fan who stumbled upon it in a booster pack — much like finding your very own golden ticket.

As the fandom continues to swell, trading cards like these are selling like hotcakes. So, it’s a good idea to start checking your home for hidden gems.

Even empty boxes, such as those from the Arabian Nights set, are fetching hefty price tags, making this a lucrative way to turn cards into cash. You never know which cards will rise in popularity or what trends will trigger the next wave of sales, so it’s wise to hold onto them.

Pokémon

Nostalgia can take many shapes and forms — like the familiar yellow, red-cheeked companion named Pikachu, who became a staple in ’90s households everywhere. With pockets now visibly fuller than those of children when Pokémon first burst onto the scene, Millennials are rushing to catch them all, rediscovering the joys of a bygone era and finding a spark of childhood magic with new eyes — and new price tags.

Pokémon trading card sales have seen a remarkable surge, increasing by more than 500% in 2020 alone, and this trend shows no signs of fading. Just imagine what those trading cards could be worth in the years to come. Start digging and collecting now, and you might just make the trade of your life with one lucky forgotten pack.

Old packs are especially valuable, as many are no longer being printed, making the existing ones highly sought after — and some might be hidden away in your attic, waiting to be rediscovered.

Sports cards

Sports have long been a cornerstone of American culture, bringing people together and sparking rivalries for generations. Sports trading cards capture that passion and preserve iconic moments in a tangible form, making them timeless collectibles with the potential for future gains. Between 2025 and 2029, the sports trading card market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 19.1%, signaling steady growth ahead.

This rise in popularity is largely driven by the convenience of the online marketplace, which has made buying and selling sports cards easier than ever. Paired with the increasing interest in these collectibles, it’s an investment worth considering.

Tips for preserving your trading cards

  • Use binders

Place your trading cards in a binder to shield them from dust and other factors that could damage them. This also helps maintain their shape and keeps them organized. You can categorize them based on specific criteria or collections.

  • Card sleeves

Using sleeves is a must for extending the life and maintaining the value of your trading cards. Pristine condition is a crucial factor in determining the value of collectible cards. Sleeves protect against scratches, creases and other forms of wear and tear, ensuring your cards remain in top condition for years to come.

Toys

  • The LEGO Ultimate Collector’s Series Millennium Falcon sold for $15,000, making it one of the most valuable toys on the market.

If you have kids, chances are your home is already overflowing with toys. But before you start tossing out the outgrown ones, consider this: Some of today’s toys might turn into tomorrow’s valuable collectibles. Right now, there’s a trend where Gen Z and Millennials are eager to reconnect with their childhood memories, spending extravagantly on nostalgic toys from their past. This means some of your children’s favorites could end up being worth significant money down the road.

“Items worth keeping around should usually be things that are low investment, high scarcity and depreciate very little,” says Chris McDermott of Intercoastal Consulting & Life Care Planning.

“A good example of this would be a collectible item. The collectors’ market will pay a hefty price for a boxed piece of a specific item related to a given franchise or company because the item itself doesn’t depreciate so long as it is unused and only has more to gain as collectible items get phased out over time.”

LEGO sets

You’re probably no stranger to LEGO and its iconic sets, not to mention those tiny pieces that always seem to find their way under your bare feet when you’re just trying to relax at home. The company has built its way to the top, LEGO brick by LEGO brick, as the number one toy maker worldwide.

Certain LEGO sets and characters hold their value incredibly well, largely because of how rare and popular they are. The fact that they’re hard to come by only makes them more desirable. Take the LEGO Pirates Black Seas Barracuda, for example. Released back in 1989, it originally cost just $67, but today it’s worth a staggering $6,330, a 9,348% increase from its original price. Another standout is the San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Spider-Woman Minifigure, which is now valued at around $7,270.
Scattered LEGO blocks. If you’re thinking of keeping your LEGO sets, here’s a tip: Hold onto the boxes too. Having the original packaging can significantly boost the value of your sets. This is especially true for rare or limited-edition sets, where the box is a big part of what makes them collectible.

Jellycats

Jellycat plushies have become a fan favorite among Gen Z, combining the perfect blend of plushies and food to create plushies shaped like food items — what is there not to love?

Nostalgia has turned Gen Z into their own category of collectors, the so-called “kidults,” who are willing to spend big on Jellycats in pursuit of the joy they might have missed out on during their childhood. Numbers are only confirming this, as the brand has seen its annual global income skyrocket nearly eight times from 2013 to 2022, with revenue growth of around 230% since 2020 alone.

“One category I always tell people not to sleep on is branded merchandise from viral or short-lived cultural moments. Let me give you an example,” says Ryan McDonald of Resell Calendar. “A few years back, McDonald’s released a limited-edition collaboration with Travis Scott. It was just merch tied to a fast food meal — but now, those T-shirts, posters and even the tray liners from that campaign are reselling for hundreds. Same with branded gear from defunct tech startups, niche influencers or once-hyped subscription boxes. Why? Because cultural moments are time-stamped, and people develop emotional attachments to them even if they were short-lived.”

Jellycats are part of the same movement, and they can get you a pretty buck when kept for future gains. Certain Jellycat plushies can increase in value significantly, with some rare ones selling for thousands of dollars. These fluffy little companions are definitely worth holding onto, as their rarity and unique designs make them highly sought after by collectors.

Hot Wheels

Hot Wheels have captured the hearts of children and adults alike, offering a pocket-sized version of cars with a side of nostalgia on the side.

These miniature vehicles have always been trending, with a solid fan base among car enthusiasts and collectors. Their enduring popularity proves that their value remains stable and often increases over time, making them a smart investment for your future self.
Hot Wheels cars and track.Much like LEGOs, keeping Hot Wheels in their original packaging can add an extra layer of value. Not only does it protect them from scratches and other damage, but it also preserves their condition, which is crucial for maintaining their worth. This is especially important if you’re considering them as an investment or part of a collection.

Stamps

  • The British Guiana 1c Magenta sold for $9.48 million, making it one of the most valuable stamps in history.

A classic choice for collectors, stamps have stood the test of time, their value a testament to their enduring appeal. These small trinkets from times past or present are cherished by a dedicated community.

With the online world at their fingertips, stamp collectors have found a haven in specialized platforms, complete with databases for unique collections and forums to connect with fellow enthusiasts. While collectors navigate these digital spaces, they often discover new ways to appreciate and preserve their stamps, which is crucial for maintaining their value and condition.

One mistake to avoid is using photo albums to store your stamps, as they often contain an adhesive that can cling to and even damage your stamps. Instead, opt for specialized stamp albums designed specifically for this purpose. For a deeper dive into the art of storing and protecting your stamps, our in-depth guide provides all the details.

Man looking at stamp collection.Stamps that hold particular value for collectors include:

  • Mint condition stamps: These have seen a significant appreciation of 45.5% over the past decade.
  • Misprints: Despite their unusual nature, these errors are highly sought after.
  • Out-of-print stamps: Currently unavailable, these can only be acquired from other collectors, making them highly valuable.
  • Stamps with perforation errors: Stamps with incorrect perforations are rare and highly prized.
  • Stamps with color variations: Stamps with incorrect or unique colors compared to their standard counterparts are also highly valuable.

Books

  • A first edition of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” sold for $471,000, setting a world record for modern literature.

A tale as old as time, books have long woven the fabric of human experience into written form — and they’re definitely here to stay. Maybe you’ve felt the urge to share your favorite childhood story with your own child, only to discover it’s nowhere to be found. That’s why holding onto books can be both sentimental and surprisingly valuable. If you searched for that same book now, its rarity might mean it comes with a hefty price tag.

First editions or signed copies hold a special allure, driven by their scarcity and the sense of pride they bring to collectors. Owning a limited-run edition in your personal library is a unique and unmatched feeling for many book lovers.

Among the most notable sales in recent years, a first edition of J.K. Rowling’s debut novel “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” fetched over $471,000 at auction. So, the next time you pick up a great novel, consider hanging onto it — you never know what it might be worth someday. Safely store your first editions and treasure them for whatever the future may bring.

Watches

  • A 1968 Rolex Daytona once owned by Paul Newman sold for $17.8 million, setting a world record for the most expensive wristwatch ever sold at the time.

Before TikTok, there was the original “ticktock” — the watch. With a legacy that spans centuries, watches have remained a cornerstone of the collectibles world, backed by a loyal community of enthusiasts. Far from fading, this tradition continues to tick forward with style and purpose.

As a long-term investment, watches have proven to be a reliable and tangible asset. The market remains vibrant and active, and these timepieces have consistently outperformed other collectibles in value growth. Between 2013 and 2022, watches appreciated at an average annual rate of about 7%, with sought-after models from brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe experiencing increases of up to 20% per year.

Proper documentation and authentication are essential for establishing a watch’s value. Keeping records — and ideally the original box — helps preserve and even enhance its worth, making it more attractive to collectors.
Watch collection.Among the most iconic sales, a 1968 Rolex Daytona fetched $17.8 million — not just for its mechanical precision but for its famous owner. The watch belonged to actor and race car driver Paul Newman, who wore it daily after receiving it from his wife, Joanne Woodward. Her engraved message, “Drive Carefully Me,” added personal charm to a watch that became legendary, marking a historic milestone in the world of watch collecting.

Coins

  • Among the most valuable coins, a 1943 Lincoln head copper penny sold for $200,000, making it one of the most prized error coins in U.S. history.

If you had a penny for every missed opportunity to collect valuable coins, you’d likely find yourself surrounded by a rather impressive pile. Coins, after all, are not just currency but miniature time capsules that preserve the stories of our shared histories. Reflecting the facets of human evolution, these tangible connections offer a rare chance to hold history.

As the present fades into the past, coins stand as enduring bridges between eras — something collectors are aware of and actively seek.

“For me, and based on my experience, coins become valuable over time when they capture a story,” says Ryan McDonald. “That’s because collectors know that they aren’t just chasing scarcity here, they’re chasing the emotional connection that comes with it. A coin that marks a major cultural or political moment feels like owning a small piece of history. It’s something tangible tied to a memory, an era or a shift that mattered. And that emotional relevance gives the coin staying power over time, and that’s often what drives its long-term value.”

A perfect example of this is the 2025 penny, which has already begun reselling for 100 times its face value. The U.S. Mint is set to cease the production of the penny entirely — a decision that has collectors scrambling to secure these coins as both keepsakes and investments for the future.

“It might not be rare yet, but it represents the end of a coin that’s been part of American life for over a hundred years. It was discontinued by a politically charged decision, which adds another layer of interest. And this ties with what I said a moment ago — currently, people aren’t just collecting it — they’re preserving a moment. Years from now, these discontinued coins will hold far greater value because they are tied with a long-lost memory of the time when something ordinary quietly disappeared. The penny was never flashy, never rare — but its disappearance will be. That contrast is what makes it unforgettable, and that’s exactly what collectors latch onto,” McDonald added.

A remarkable example of a moment in history captured in a penny is the 1943 Lincoln head copper penny, which sold for $200,000. During World War II, the U.S. Mint swapped copper for steel in penny production to preserve metal for the war effort. But a few copper blanks were accidentally used, resulting in one of the most prized error coins in U.S. history. Its value came not just from rarity but from the story it told — a moment in time captured in copper, when global events quietly shaped even the smallest corners of everyday life.
Coin collection.Coins can become valuable not just because of their rarity but because they evoke certain memories. Keeping an eye on these items can in turn offer you a pleasant surprise in the future, so hold onto them — you never know when history might be hiding in your change jar.

Storing your collectible items to preserve their value

Some collectibles are easier to store than others — but many require special care to maintain their condition and value over time.

Take stamps, for example. They’re highly sensitive to environmental changes and should be stored in air-conditioned spaces with stable temperatures and low humidity to prevent fading or deterioration. Likewise, books should be kept neatly on shelves, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Dog-eared pages, torn dust jackets or scuffed spines can easily happen if books are carelessly stacked or shoved under furniture — small damages that can significantly reduce their worth.

If your home lacks sufficient space, a self storage unit can be an ideal solution. Even a small 5’x5’ unit can accommodate a surprising number of items. A climate-controlled unit allows you to set a consistent temperature, ensuring your belongings are protected from environmental fluctuations without sacrificing space in your home.

Boxes outside storage unit.Regularly check on your stored items to ensure they’re faring well, and rotate them if necessary.

When you’re getting ready for your next big spring cleaning, take a moment to ponder and assess the items in your household. Trading cards, kids’ toys and books you might have even forgotten about buying can now turn that unappealing clutter into cash. It’s worth holding onto these items, alongside watches or perhaps stamps if you’re an avid or novice collector.

Proper storage is just as important to ensure their value can increase over time. If your home doesn’t provide enough space, a storage unit can help you achieve that home away from home.

Before you throw away that LEGO set, check for its true value — you might be surprised. You never know how you can turn a little item into a good investment for the future.
