• The smallest home owned by a top celebrity is 1,962 square feet
  • Movie stars have the smallest homes compared to other A-listers in the music, TV and sports industries. Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson own four of the top 10 smallest homes in celebrity real estate
  • The music realm is also well-represented in the small-home department with Dave Matthews owning a 2,180-square-foot residence in Seattle, and Dhani Harrison and Taylor Swift follow closely with homes spanning 2,826 and 3,240 square feet in Venice Beach and Nashville, respectively
  • Small does not mean cheap in celebrity real estate: the average value of a top celebrity home is $14 million
  • The most expensive property per square foot by far is Sting’s NYC pad. The stunning 5,807-square-foot home came with a $65.7M price tag – roughly $11,300 per square foot

It’s hard to picture the big stars of modern times living like the rest of us mere mortals in 2,300-square-foot homes. And for good, fact-based reason. According to our research of 131 homes owned by the crème de la crème of pop culture stars (by net worth), the average size of celebrity real estate is 10,243 square feet, roughly the same square footage enjoyed by the first family’s quarters in the White House. The largest celeb home amasses a mind-boggling 38,000 square feet, nearly six times larger than Warren Buffet’s Omaha residence.

Yet, amidst the glitz and glamour, there’s also a cohort of A-listers that live small even if they play big. Brad Pitt resides in a small – albeit exclusive – 2,000-square-foot house in LA. And he’s not alone in his love of simple living.

Our research team at StorageCafe dove deep into celebrity real estate owned by Oscar winning movie stars, TV influencers, sports icons and music legends to see who favors cozy living over mansion glitz. Interestingly enough, we found that quite a few of the glitterati have opted for relatively modest homes as primary residences. Join us as we peek behind the velvet curtain into the homes of Hollywood’s elite to uncover who champions compact elegance.

Star power, smaller footprint: Top 10 smallest celebrity homes

Contrary to the perception that fame begets sprawling estates with gold-plated everything, some stars have opted for a more modest approach to their living spaces. Yes, you read that right — celebrities with homes that could be deemed, dare we say, small compared to both their personal net worth value and their peers’ residential preferences.

Here’s an overview of the top 10 celebrity homes with a small footprint – proof that small can be sleek.

1. Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel, the charismatic late-night maestro has the smallest home in our ranking. He snatched up the 1,962-square-foot three-bed, three-bath for $1.1 million — a modest abode for someone who has established himself as a household name in the entertainment realm and has at least $50M to his name.

In the upscale vicinity near Chateau Marmont, he opted for a residence with sizes that align closely with conventional standards, yet his penchant for interior decor veers into the realm of opulence. Celebrity videos reveal that Jimmy Kimmel's home is adorned with mid-century furniture, elegant brass sconces, and an array of sizable art pieces.

2. Brad Pitt

Besides his array of accolades including Oscars, Golden Globes and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, Brad Pitt has collected a series of trophy real estate. In fact, he has spoken about his affinity for architecture and interior design on several occasions. So, it comes as no surprise that he selected some impressive homes and enhanced them even further to his own taste and with attention to detail.

However, what truly stands out is his present dwelling in the Los Feliz neighborhood of LA, known as the Steel House. Covering 2,000 square feet, this residence was crafted in 1960 by the relatively obscure midcentury architect Neil M. Johnson. The Steel House bears the unmistakable imprints of its era, featuring a distinctive rectangular roofline, terrazzo floors, beamed ceilings and cantilevered eaves.

3. Dave Matthews

The lead singer of the Dave Matthews Band, renowned for his soulful melodies, avoids the typical extravagance associated with celebrity living. Dave Matthews opts for a more understated lifestyle, evident in his choice of residence — an unassuming 2,180-square-foot home in the vibrant city of Seattle.

In July 2001, Matthews purchased this three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in the Wallingford area, making a humble investment of $360,000 at the time, as reported by Realtor.com. Throughout time, the 2,180-square-foot residence has experienced substantial appreciation and is currently valued at $1,046,200 — though this remains relatively modest when juxtaposed with his impressive $300 million net worth.

4. Robert De Niro

A true New Yorker through and through, Hollywood icon Robert De Niro has not only called the city home but has also invested in property within his home state. In 1997, he made a $1.5 million investment in an estate in Gardiner, New York, and has made it his primary residence ever since. De Niro's compound encompasses a 2,222-square-foot main house, replacing the original 18th-century farmhouse, set on an impressive 78 acres of land.

The property underwent extensive renovations to accommodate De Niro's growing family, resulting in a residence featuring six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Notably, the barn on the grounds underwent a remarkable transformation into a sprawling 14,000-square-foot recreation center.

The place now includes a gym, a boxing room, a game room, a swimming pool and sauna, a basketball court and even a small film studio. Surrounding the main house are two guest houses, a tennis court and a miniature ski slope, creating a comprehensive estate that reflects Robert De Niro's iconic style.

5. Clint Eastwood

Diverging from the Hollywood norm where stars flock to Los Angeles, the leading man of "Cry Macho" has chosen a different path, residing "out there where he’s got all those acres" in Carmel’s Mission Ranch. Clint Eastwood's abode, a historic farmhouse nestled in the California landscape, deviates somewhat from the typical celebrity residence.

Spanning a modest 2,781 square feet and featuring six guest rooms, this dwelling carries a rich legacy dating back to the 1850s. Originally constructed on the Monterey Peninsula by some original pioneers, the farmhouse underwent a transformative journey in 1895, evolving into a two-story structure.

The Mission Ranch property is one of the most picturesque sites on the gorgeous northern California coast, with spectacular views of the sea.

6. Dhani Harrison

The talented British musician and composer is not just the son of the iconic Beatles legend George Harrison, but is also carving out his own path in the music industry. Inherited, Dhani possesses not only father’s dark good looks but also a profound and meditative sense of spirituality. This lineage of musical genius and spiritual depth is reflected in more than just his artistic endeavors — it extends to his choice of residence as well.

Nestled within the serene canal system of Venice, California, Dhani's 2,826-square-foot waterfront home serves as both a personal haven and an embodiment of modern style. Priced at $3.99 million, the residence is a canvas that reflects his own artistic sensibilities, but is also relatively modest compared to his $275 million net worth. As Dhani forges ahead with his music career, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, this waterfront abode stands as a testament to his fusion of inherited creativity and contemporary taste.

7. Jimmy Donaldson

Jimmy Donaldson, better known as Mr. Beast, was the highest-earning creator on YouTube in 2022. Despite his substantial earnings, he continues to live in his childhood neighborhood in Greenville, North Carolina. Donaldson’s residence is a two-story house spanning nearly 3,000 square feet, featuring four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a patio, a screened-in back porch and a basketball court. There’s also additional storage in a separate building.

Over the past couple of years, the 25-year-old media sensation has gained recognition not only for his videos but also for his philanthropy. According to the New York Post, he has purchased other properties in the Greenville area to support those close to him. He specifically chose a cul-de-sac for the five homes he bought in his neighborhood.

Despite accumulating over 40 billion views on his videos, which has significantly increased his net worth, Donaldson’s properties don’t scream luxury. Instead, they reflect a more modest lifestyle.

8. Taylor Swift

The music sensation with a staggering net worth of $1.1 billion isn't just dominating the charts but also making waves in the real estate realm. With a portfolio boasting eight homes across four states, Swift is not just a pop icon but also a budding real estate mogul. Amidst her various properties, one that stands out is her relatively small yet stylish abode in Nashville. Purchased at the age of 20 for $1.9 million, this 3,240-square-foot penthouse on Music Row holds sentimental value as it marks one of Swift's first real estate ventures.

Situated in the Adelicia complex, the three-bedroom corner duplex features soaring ceilings and has become a whimsical haven. Decorated in an Alice in Wonderland-inspired theme, the girly-girl abode showcases vibrant splashes of color, offering a playful retreat for the singer when she's not captivating audiences on tour. The corner unit penthouse boasts 3 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms and a balcony on two sides, where Swift has been spotted enjoying her morning coffee.

Taylor Swift’s taste in smaller homes is also reflected in her Tribeca property in New York City, where she owns a 3,540-square-foot home. Apart from that, Swift’s preference for real estate has evolved over the years, expanding her property portfolio to include residences as large as 12,000 square feet. This includes her extravagant home in Westerly, Rhode Island, where she holds her renowned A-list gatherings.

9. Mark Edward Fischbach, aka Markiplier

Mark Edward Fischbach, better known as Markiplier, the actor and YouTube sensation with a staggering 33.6 million subscribers, has made headlines not only for his prowess as a digital-creator but also for his surprising real estate move.

Markiplier traded the streets of Cincinnati for the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, California, marking a significant shift in both his career and lifestyle. While details about his past residences remain private, the YouTuber recently made waves by acquiring a stunning 3,279-square-foot mansion previously owned by Childish Gambino.

Inside the abode, the living room offers a feast for the eyes with its panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains and a cozy ambiance with built-ins and a fireplace. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, Markiplier's home is relatively small compared to other celebrities of his level, yet undoubtedly luxurious.

10. Jack Nicholson

Renowned for his iconic roles and magnetic screen presence, Jack Nicholson's choice of a more modest-sized home in the heart of Beverly Hills is a departure from the ostentatious lifestyles often associated with Hollywood stars. Acquired for $5 million in 2005, Nicholson's estate spans 3,303 square feet, offering a superb yet intimate living space — all quite modest given his substantial net worth of $400 million.

With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, Nicholson’s Beverly Hills abode provides ample room for the legendary actor to unwind in style. Beyond the confines of this main residence, Nicholson's real estate portfolio unveils a broader picture of his diverse tastes. Notable among his other properties is a sprawling 70-acre compound in Malibu, acquired in 1977, and a charming 1,300 square feet home nestled in the iconic Hollywood Hills.

Smaller living more to movie stars' taste, while singers and athletes go big with their home choices

Among the various celebrities, big-screen movie stars stand out for having a penchant for smaller living spaces compared to stars in other industries. Sizes of the top 10 smallest movie-star residences average out at 3,213 square feet.

The-Size-of-Big-Stars'-Properties

“Celebrities, known for their opulent lifestyles, are increasingly gravitating towards smaller homes for various reasons,” says Reinis Butka, CEO and founder of Luminesy, who’s worked with a well-known actress who chose a smaller, eco-conscious home. “Beyond the allure of minimalism, these individuals seek functional, well-designed spaces that prioritize efficiency and comfort over sheer size. Smaller homes allow for more intimate and personalized living, fostering a sense of coziness and connection.”

On the other end of the spectrum, some celebrities don’t cut any corners and reside in sprawling mansions that seem to defy the laws of architecture, with rooms that rival luxury hotels in both size and amenities. Music performers and athletes take 13 out of the 20 spots for largest celebrity homes, headed by J Lo’s 38,000-square-foot mansion. Michael Jordan tops the athletes’ list of sprawling pads with his 28,000 square-foot home in Jupiter, FL.

We've broken down the rankings below to see the smallest and largest celebrity homes in each category, including the film industry, music, TV and sports.

Movie star real estate split between cozy retreats and lavish estates

Joining Brad Pitt as a fan of cozy living spaces, Robert De Niro owns the second-smallest home among the biggest movie stars. The 2,222-square-foot abode is located in Gardiner, New York, and sits on 98 acres. As you might suspect, De Niro owns other properties besides his primary residence, among which are his stunning Greenwich Village penthouse and a luxurious Central Park West apartment. Clint Eastwood comes in third with a cozy 2,781-square-foot haven — but again, this is only one of his five homes.

Jack Nicholson also finds comfort in a compact home, with his primary residence measuring only 3,303 square feet. His second home in Malibu is even smaller, at 2,313 square feet. Meanwhile, actress Victoria Principal rounds out the list of top five movie stars with smaller homes with a residence spanning 3,313 square feet — less than half the space of her second home.

These big screen legends prove that when it comes to their personal sanctuaries, it's not always about size but often about finding solace in smaller, more meaningful spaces.

On the other side of the spectrum, the movie star with the largest home in our ranking is Denzel Washington with an estate fit for a king: a sprawling 28,887 square-foot-house set on 2.13 acres. Following closely is Will Smith’s residence in Calabasas, CA, with an impressive 25,000 square feet, while Tom Cruise enjoys the comforts of a 20,826-square-foot mansion in Clearwater, FL.

Tom Hanks’ cliffside mansion in Pacific Palisades spans 14,513 square feet, and Sylvester Stallone, with a 13,241-square-foot residence situated in an extra exclusive celebrity neighborhood in Palm Beach, FL, round out the top 5 largest celebrity homes list.

TV stars and influencers prefer smaller, yet more opulent abodes

The homes of TV personalities and online influencers are 1.3 times bigger than those of movie stars, averaging 3,993 square feet.

Joining Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Donaldson and Markiplier, Conan O’Brien comes in fourth with his Coastal California home. The 3,479-square-foot residence is seaside, featuring beach access via a staircase. With four bedrooms and four bathrooms across split levels, the house exudes an open, airy ambiance with numerous windows and French doors at the rear. Despite its coziness, this home holds a value of $23 million.

Claiming the 5th spot in the category is the reigning queen of true crime makeup videos on YouTube, Bailey Sarian. Her Hollywood Hills apartment is roughly 3,700 square feet.

At the other end of the spectrum, movie industry mogul Tyler Perry lives in an impressive $100 million mega mansion. Situated on more than 1,000 acres in Douglasville, Georgia, the house features approximately 35,000 square feet of living space with eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.

Steve Harvey is the runner up in the race for biggest homes with a 34,688-square-foot estate that includes seven bedrooms and 9.5 bathrooms. The prime property sits on 17 acres on a piece of land overlooking the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, GA. Luxurious amenities abound, featuring an infinity-edged pool, a tennis court, a fully equipped gym and a spa, making it reputedly one of the most expensive homes in Atlanta.

Between Nashville and Los Angeles, music stars also alternate between lavish living and embracing simplicity

Artists with musical careers own homes that cover an average of 4,200 square feet, 45% larger than the average American home. While some choose to live in California with the rest of the glitterati, much of the other half resides in Nashville, the place they call Music City.

Aside from Dave Matthews, Dhani Harrison and Taylor Swift — who we’ve already identified as fans of cozy living — Dolly Parton also shines. The Queen of Country has resided in a warm, 3,324-square-foot Nashville home ever since 1999 when she purchased it with her husband for $400,000. While the main house was initially a little over 3,000 square feet, the estate reportedly boasts 7,562 square feet of living space today.

And while we’re still in Nashville, it’s worth mentioning the home of pop sensation Justin Timberlake, who dances to the rhythm of a spacious yet intimate 3,550-square-foot home.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are those music artists who redefine the idea of luxurious living and revel in royalty-like retreats.

For example, famous twosome J.Lo and Ben Affleck have secured the top spot on our list of music artists with the largest homes with their latest acquisition. Their impressive $60 million Beverly Hills mansion spans a whopping 38,000 square feet. Situated on a sprawling five-acre lot, the couple’s recently acquired estate features 12 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms, a cinema, a wine cellar and an intimate whiskey lounge, alongside an array of other lavish amenities.

Another power couple, Beyonce and Jay Z, own – among other properties – a massive 30,000 square foot estate in Bel Air, CA. The incredible 8-bedroom, 11-bathroom mansion sits on just over 1.5 acres of expensive real estate. The place is chock full of high-end amenities, including a 15-car garage, 4 pools and a recording studio — and the neighbors also tend to be celebrities.

Following up close behind is Billy Joel with his 20,000 square feet one-of-a-kind waterfront estate. It comes complete with floating dock on Oyster Bay Harbor and a helicopter pad.

Next in the top 5 of opulence is rapper Sean Combs, aka P-Diddy, with a European-style villa in Beverly Hills, CA, spanning 17,000 square feet, complemented by an additional 3,000-square-foot guest house on the grounds.

Sports people go big with the largest houses in the ranking, averaging at 8,251 square feet

In the realm of home sizes, sportspeople, accustomed to the expansiveness of football fields and basketball courts, demonstrate an affinity for spacious living. Perhaps the instinct for wide-open spaces extends from the playing field to the comfort of home, as athletes, unreservedly embrace grand residences and refine the notion of living large.

In fact, homes of celebrities in sport are 2.6 times more expansive than those of movie stars and a staggering 72% larger than the average residence in the United States.

The primary residence of football icon Tom Brady in Miami, FL, spans 5,172 square feet, but he's recognized for owning least nine other properties. While this is the smallest home in the athletes' category, with an estimated value of $17 million, there's nothing modest about it.

On second place is Shaquille O’Neal who, despite the fortunes resulting from his many achievements, is starting to take steps toward downsizing his luxurious life. After selling a notoriously huge 31,000 square feet property in Florida, he purchased a smaller yet still stunning home in the Texas suburbs featuring 5,269 square feet, five bedrooms and six bathrooms.

In Windermere, FL, Gary Player, one of the greatest golfers of all time, retired to a 6,900 square feet home, which he purchased for over $6 million according to public records.

Forth on the list is NBA legend Magic Johnson who lives in a 7,764 square feet home in Dana Point, CA – a home which is smaller than the average home size of athletes, but still almost double the total player area of an NBA basketball court. The home is estimated at almost $9 million – which is almost insignificant compared to his $620 million net worth.

Finally, boxer Oscar de la Hoya ranks 5th on the list of athletes with the smallest homes, with his luxurious 8,051-square-foot residence in Henderson, NV, which he purchased for $14.6 million in cash.

And just when you thought the top 5 smallest athlete homes were impressive, feast your eyes on some of the grandest residences in our ranking.

Michael Jordan, for instance, calls a 3-acre homesite at the Bears Club in Jupiter, FL, his home. The estate is enveloped by a literal forest of trees, providing little to no view into his colossal 28,000 square feet residence, which comprises three separate structures — a guard house, guest house and pool house. Having invested $4.8 million in the land and $7.6 million in construction, this $12.4 million mansion stands as perhaps the most expensive non-waterfront home in the Palm Beaches.

Floyd Mayweather owns the second-largest residence in our small home ranking, a sprawling Vegas estate adorned with 11 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, numerous guest houses, an expansive courtyard, a subterranean garage for 20 cars and, naturally, a luxurious swimming pool.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's residence is an awe-inspiring Beverly Park estate, spanning 17,630 square feet and is situated on a sprawling 3.67-acre property. It claims the title of the largest property in the upscale Beverly Park neighborhood, which is also home to numerous other celebrities, including Eddie Murphy, Sofía Vergara, Sylvester Stallone and Rod Stewart.

Residing in Greenwich, CT, Vince McMahon, the proprietor of the renowned Sports Entertainment Company, leads a royal lifestyle in a 17,000-square-foot mansion. This three-story residence boasts seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a gym, guest rooms, and every imaginable luxury.

Closing the top 5 for the largest small homes in our ranking is Peyton Manning, yet another exceptional athlete who appreciates expansive living. His Denver mansion sprawls across 16,464 square feet and 3.4 acres, showcasing seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms. Spanning three stories, the residence includes a wine cellar, a splendid grand balcony, a spacious garage accommodating seven cars, and even an elevator for seamless travel from top to bottom.

The most expensive homes ranked by price per square foot

Where does the square foot become a measure of extravagance? In celebrity homes, of course. Here are some of the residences in our ranking that redefine the pinnacle of real estate.

Sting’s 15 Central Park West pad is jaw-dropping, and so is the price. With an average of $11,314 per square foot, Sting and Trudie Styler's New York City 5,807 Square foot penthouse is the crème de la crème of celebrity homes.

Continuing our journey through unparalleled grandeur, we arrive at Ellen DeGeneres' Santa Barbara abode. Encompassing 9,066 square feet and boasting a staggering price tag of $7,715 per square foot, this dwelling is situated in a prestigious neighborhood that counts Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Rob Lowe and Tyler Perry among its other famous residents.

Conan O’Brien, on the other hand, owns a modest-sized, yet nonetheless expensive home in Coastal California with a staggering cost of $6,617, while Clint Eastwood lives in the 4th most expensive home, boasting $4,279 per square foot.

Securing its position among the top five most expensive celebrity homes per square footage is Jon Bon Jovi's Palm Beach estate stands out with its seven bedrooms and twelve bathrooms. Valued at $43 million, the property commands an impressive $4,203 per each of its 10,232 square feet, securing its position among the top five most expensive celebrity homes per square footage.

Do celebrities use self storage?

It’s no secret that celebrities lead lifestyles distinct from the average person, yet in certain aspects, they share similarities with us regular folks. Even though they may own expansive homes with ample closet space and top-notch garages, some A-listers are known to make use of self-storage. Because some things are just better kept in storage, especially since celebrities are known for changing places of residence more than most of us.

For instance, Jessica Alba calls a 9,000-square-foot residence in Los Angeles home, but surprisingly, she opts to store her Christmas decorations in a storage unit in Manhattan. It's noteworthy that Lionel Richie, despite owning an impressive 17,000-square-foot mansion in Los Angeles, has a history of utilizing self storage. At one point, he utilized a storage facility's parking lot and rented a storage unit to safeguard some of his possessions.

Notwithstanding their lavish lifestyles, celebrities can find a self storage unit to be genuinely beneficial, just like it is for businesses and regular people alike.

Below, you'll find the complete list of 131 celebrities and their comparisons in terms of home sizes.

Hollywood celebrities typically follow a specific real estate acquisition process that prioritizes financial considerations and safeguarding privacy. Like the general public, they may opt for mortgages or cash purchases based on their financial advice. However, to maintain confidentiality, celebrities often employ trusts with obscure names to obscure their ownership, as property transactions are public records.

Additionally, non-disclosure agreements are commonly enforced, ensuring that real estate agents safeguard client details. Celebrities frequently establish Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) or trusts to further shield their identities, with the trust acting as the property owner and a trustee unassociated with the individual. Despite these measures, news about celebrity real estate dealings is often disseminated. However, it seldom results from agent negligence, highlighting the importance of protecting celebrity privacy, which can lead to repeat business for agents.

You might find that a celebrity has an interest in reducing their carbon footprint and certainly that interest would be reflected in their choice of home. Most likely, they would want new constructions with all of the latest technology, sustainable materials, and green home features like solar panels, energy-efficient appliances and lighting, and water conservation.

[…] What is typically always a deal breaker when it comes to celebrity choice of homes is lack of privacy and lack of security. Everybody seeks peaceful enjoyment of their home and celebrities are no exception to this. Total seclusion isn’t always a necessity, but it could help! Without privacy, a celebrity cannot be afforded that peaceful enjoyment of their home. Due to their own fame, this, at times, can be tough to accomplish.
