Update: Submitted a ticket for help with the issues below and the unit is now around 80° - I don't consider that climate controlled. Prior to this entire mess, I had actually reserved a 10x10 unit for around $120 for three months. I received the SMS confirmation, but no additional information afterward. When I called the next morning during business hours, suddenly every available 10x10 unit at the location had “disappeared,” and somehow the smaller 10x7 units were now priced basically the same as the original 10x10. It honestly felt like the typical algorithm/AI-style pricing nonsense where the second you repeatedly look at a unit or go through the reservation process, the prices magically increase or the unit suddenly becomes “unavailable.” I had already entered all of my information and gone through the reservation process, only for everything to completely change the next day. My first experience with the Monona location was wonderful from start to finish, so honestly, what was I thinking trusting this second location without seeing it first? The Fitchburg location is absolutely disgusting. It smells terrible, it’s dirty, there were dead bugs everywhere (flies and things I couldn’t even identify), and there is basically zero airflow in the building. At one point I could also smell marijuana, and honestly it gave the impression that some people may actually be hanging out or living out of units instead of simply storing belongings there. Another major downside is that you have to unload everything outside with no covered loading area, which was incredibly inconvenient. I was honestly relieved there was a law enforcement officer sitting in the parking lot while I was moving my belongings but they left when I did to not return. I was there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the amount of random people hanging around made me very uncomfortable. At one point, a man sat in his car waiting to piggyback through the sliding glass doors using my access code, so I stopped and waited in my car until he moved along. Later, another man followed me into the stairwell area, which also made me uncomfortable enough that I stepped aside and let him go ahead of me. When I returned with another load, there was a group directly across from my unit with the storage door partially open and partially closed. I could hear multiple voices inside, and there were garbage bags and rolling suitcases everywhere. This was also the third separate group of people I had seen throughout the day seemingly exchanging clothing/items out of bags and suitcases. They told me I could walk past them, but I was uncomfortable because I couldn’t see who else was inside the unit. I ended up setting my things around the corner, waiting a few minutes, then eventually going back downstairs for another load until they finally left. The staircase was honestly the cleanest part of the building besides the lobby. The stainless steel inside the elevator was covered in fingerprints, grime, and marks that clearly had not been cleaned in a long time. The carts were equally disgusting. I started wearing gloves while moving because every single time I carried a load up or down, my hands were practically black afterward. I convinced myself downsizing to a smaller unit for the same price would be fine. It was not. Now I’m just hoping my belongings don’t end up infested after the three months I rented the unit, and that the smell doesn’t stick to everything I own. My advice: drive farther away and rent somewhere cleaner. ... Read more

This company clearly feels comfortable taking advantage of customers. I rented a unit for $96, it increased to $105 shortly after, and now by the fourth month they want to charge $185. That’s nearly double in just a few months. After reading many reviews online, it seems like this pricing pattern happens frequently. I’m honestly surprised the Google rating is as high as it is. My guess is those reviews may be influenced by short-term promotions like free first months. The facility itself is clean, but these pricing practices feel very misleading. I only have a few totes in my unit, so I’ll be moving out. Very disappointing experience. ... Read more

It’s a nice modern building with large elevators, etc. just beware: “no contract” means they will jack your monthly price up! Since I started here in January 2024, with a 5 x 9 unit, here are my monthly rates: $28, $56, $66, and next month, $111. Looking elsewhere… Jan. 2026 update: subtracting a star. they said whoops, the algorithm did that, we’ll bump it down to $80, that’s as low as we can go. For one month. Back up to $100 this month. ... Read more

We had a wonderful experience moving in today! I accidentally forgot my keys back in Illinois and they gave us a new lock with a new set of keys at no extra charge. Jack personally helped us find the bathroom on the first floor for my two sons. Everything is clean, brand, new, exactly as explained online, orderly, technologically, updated, smooth, and graceful. Thanks for a great moving experience! ... Read more

The facility is well-lit, and the security is top-notch—something I really appreciate, especially when loading or unloading late at night. Don at ExtraSpace Storage was very helpful. He made my very first storage rental experience painless. This location, 2712 is very clean, temperature controlled, with easy access. I have no complaints at this time, and hopefully I will not. All of the staff at both locations provided awesome customer service. Jaime, at the location next door was very helpful as well. Thanks everyone! Dr. Cathy ... Read more

First of all my advertised 10'x15' space is actually 9.5' x 14' if I'm being generous in my measurements. I've been in an Extra Space 10' x 15' in another town and could tell right away that this space looked smaller. Second, the door handle and lock is of lower quality than the space I had previously. The mounted slide plate is loose and hard to line up when closing the door. Instead of a padlock they make you purchase a 'barrel lock' which isn't as secure to begin with, it's a pretty generic bike lock looking key. They facility is new looking but they sure look like they cut costs to boost their profit. ... Read more

Convenient location brand new building half off first months rent of $40/m. App allowed opening of exterior door instead of punching in code which is an easy tap of screen. Little did I know they would double that price with an email that I felt was bait & switch. I did not have time or energy to move to another location. I did not take screenshot of payment history before my online account was closed. To the big wigs: Do not provide loose handled carts that totally throw off balance of load meticulously packed causing damage to precious items. Those issues caused me to rent another unit at competitor U-Haul which included a full month free of $169 with truck rental. Who has my return business? Well both units are empty a half month early, which would U choose? I know own two locks with only one that I can reuse. ... Read more

    Frequently Asked Questions

The right storage unit size depends on what you plan to store and how much space you need to move around your items.

5x5 or 5x10 units are great for smaller loads, such as chairs, lamps, small furniture pieces, boxes, books, and documents.

10x10 or 10x15 units work well for larger furniture, bicycles, appliances, and the contents of a small apartment.

10x20 or 10x30 units can typically fit the contents of a three-bedroom home, including large furniture and multiple appliances.

If you’re unsure which size is best, a unit size calculator can help estimate the right fit based on the items you’re planning to store – helping you avoid paying for more space than you need.

Climate-controlled storage units maintain consistent temperature and humidity levels, helping protect items from damage caused by heat, cold, or excess moisture.

You may want climate control if you’re storing items that can be sensitive to temperature changes, such as furniture, clothing, appliances, paperwork, photographs, artwork, electronics, or wood and leather goods. These units are especially useful for long-term storage or in areas with hot summers, cold winters, or high humidity.

If you’re storing durable items like tools or outdoor gear, a standard unit may be sufficient. When in doubt, climate control offers added protection and peace of mind.
