Read some helpful reviews of SmartStop Self Storage, shared by real renters with genuine experiences and honest opinions.

I was contacted by the store 2 weeks ago letting me know that my storage unit and others alongside it had been broken into. I visited the store and took inventory of the items that were taken. The representative of the store told me that an insurance claim had already been started for me and the other renters who have been vandalized and that somebody would be calling me to complete my claim. He also told me that he would be contacting me to let me know when the hardware on the door had been repaired so that I could place a new lock. Neither of these things has happened. I'm disappointed in the way this has been handled. I have further learned that I am required to file a police report and that I should have taken pictures of the damage on that day. The representative of the store did not inform me of any of this and now 2 weeks have past. My storage unit has remained unlocked during this time because the hardware on the door had yet to be repaired. The misinformation that was given to me to this day has hindered the process of resolving the theft with the insurance company and securing the rest of my belongings within the storage unit. Update: after not hearing from Smart Stop for 2 weeks I went there to retrieve my unsecured belongings. I went to my unit and the lock to the hallway had been changed. I was not informed of the change. Heading towards the office I passed the person who had originally informed me of the break-in. His name is Sean and he says he is the manager. I stopped and asked him about the code. He said I should meet him at the office to get the new code. Once we were at the office I asked him what happened to you getting back in touch with me about the repairs. I asked what happened to you starting a claim and the insurance giving me a call? He became defensive now acting as though he didn't know who I am he demanded my ID. I pulled up my DMV digital ID to which he said I need the physical card. I said I didn't bring it because I came to do work. He said he wasn't going to give me the code without the ID in hand and I said okay but answer these questions. Why didn't you ever follow up with me, my storage unit has been unsecured for the past 2 weeks because you told me to wait for a call from you, why hasn't the insurance called me since you said you started claims for everyone whose unit was broken into in that hallway, and why wouldn't you notify me that the hallway code had been changed, essentially locking me out of my belongings? He responded by saying I'm not going to argue with you. To which I said how is this an argument when these are valid questions that a manager should answer. He continued to be defensive about my questions and then demanded that I leave the premises. I said I'm not going anywhere because I'm not doing anything wrong. The only thing wrong here is you dropped the ball and you won't take accountability for it. He then said he would be calling the cops to which I said fine. I continue to talk and express my need for answers and accountability. He did finally call 911 and I listen to the entire phone call. The most notable part being them asking is she violent and him saying no, she just won't leave. After a while the police showed up, and to wrap this story up without going on and on, they made him do his job. They also made him provide me with the code to get into the hallway. And the part that really shows his character is how he acted after he handed me the code on a card and told the police that he was going to go out there with me in order to access the unit. He did go out there, but he opened the door and by the time I got there he was nowhere to be found. Sean is the manager, or so he says. However Sean was too cowardly to come face to face with me after the sheer craziness of his behavior. Shame on Sean for pretending to be a manager when he cannot take responsibility for his words and actions. Shame on smartstop for employing someone who is too immature to apologize for his shortcomings and for making an already inconvenient situation even greater. ... Read more

Absolutely worst experience ever at renting a storage unit. As a Military Service Member who is currently still serving this Country, I entrusted this facility with by personal goods while being stationed overseas. I rented the unit in August of 2020, and my unit was broken into in September of 2020. ONE MONTH OF SECURITY IS ALL THEY PROVIDED! All the time the company collected rent which increased every year and finally notify me in May of 2025 that my unit was burglarized. Not only was I robbed of my personal items but by an individual, but I was also robbed by a company who continued to collect rent on a compromised unit. Customer service is not existent with this company. I've reached out to them multiple times to get this situation addressed and no one has tried to provide me with any type of resolution on these issues. I lost practically every piece of military award and gift, records, uniforms, gear, clothing, electronics, and things that are irreplaceable and they simply don't care. Don't find yourself in the same situation as me and please find another facility to rent a storage unit from. 20+ years of military memories and personal items gone and the company just doesn’t care. See the photos below of the unit when I packed it and what I found when I returned. ... Read more

As a professional who frequently consults on facility compliance and tenant rights, I have been monitoring the management practices at this SmartStop location for several months. What I have documented is a systemic failure of leadership and a blatant disregard for both state and federal regulations. Observed Issues: • Federal Compliance Failures I have witnessed and documented Management (specifically Reina) attempting to enforce 'rules' regarding service animals that directly contradict the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Specifically, the false claim that service animals must wear vests. This is a matter of public record and has been escalated to the appropriate federal agencies. • Safety & Security Negligence Despite tenants paying for secure facilities, the primary exit gate on the main building with the business units has been dysfunctional, leading to incidents of tenant entrapment. When these life-safety issues were brought to corporate's attention via email, they were met with silence. • Operational Incompetence Management appears to prioritize personal ego over facility maintenance. I personally observed the trash and gate violations that led to recent city intervention and formal violations being issued against this property. Intimidation Tactics: There is a documented pattern of management threatening to 'track' tenant gate logs and camera footage as a means of harassment rather than for legitimate security purposes. Final Assessment: I have already facilitated communication between affected tenants and the City Council, the Fire Department, and legal counsel in San Francisco. This facility is currently a legal and operational liability. Until there is a total overhaul of the on-site leadership, I advise all current and prospective tenants to document every interaction and keep their legal counsel on standby. SmartStop Corporate has been given every opportunity to remediate these issues and has chosen to remain unresponsive. ... Read more

SmartStop Self Storage in Concord gave me one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. I reserved online, paid in full the day before move in, and when I arrived they refused to help me because their “system was down.” They never told me their office hours, and even after confirming over the phone that I could come after work, they changed their story and denied me access. Their “courtesy” was leaving my unit open, but the unit was filthy, smelled like rodent urine, and the door was broken so I could not even use it. Customer service said no one could help because the office was closed. I went to another company the same day and moved in instantly with zero issues. When I canceled, SmartStop refused to refund me fully and charged me for a lock I could not even use. This place is dirty, outdated, and completely unprofessional. I will never use SmartStop Self Storage again and strongly recommend choosing another facility. ... Read more

I’ll start this review by saying I’ve been to a lot of storage units in the last 5 years (one might say way TOO many, but that’s a different issue, lol) Given my background all things storage… I can legitimately say that this location is hands down the best. The phones sales person was super nice and helpful and gave us a great price for a year. Most places will not let you get a set rate for any amount of time and prices go up so often and by such a large percentage is almost criminal. The premises are clean and the doors open easily (a lot of places you have to wrestle with the door to get it open). Upon arrival the office is super clean and the staff very friendly and patient with us as we asked a lot of (dumb) questions. Reva took us on a tour in the golf cart and no other facility has ever done that. There is a bathroom on site that can be accessed which is awesome and not something many storage places have. While it’s great if you never need to store anything off-site because your life is organized and streamlined…. Reality is that sometimes you just need a storage unit. If that is where you find yourself I highly recommend SmartStop storage, we specifically had the experience described at the location on Market Street in Concord. And to address the elephant in the room, yes it might seem like a bit of a “sketchy” location but the company does seem to care about that and works closely with Concord PD to keep people safe and if anything needs attention I get the impression they would make efforts to fix, repair or replace whatever it might be. But once you’re there, it’s very clean and feels safe and I am not concerned about that… Hope that helps, and happy storage hunting! ... Read more

? I recently had the pleasure of working with Marcus Michael and Reina from Smart Storage, and I couldn’t be more impressed with their professionalism and service. From the very beginning, both Marcus and Micheal were incredibly helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. They made the entire process smooth and stress-free, answering all my questions and ensuring that everything was clearly explained. Marcus showed great attention to detail and made sure my storage needs were fully met. Micheal was equally outstanding—courteous, organized, and very responsive. It’s rare to find a team that genuinely cares about their customers the way they do. If you’re looking for reliable and trustworthy storage solutions, I highly recommend Smart Storage. ... Read more

Reva was so kind and helpful! I came in to rent a small unit and she was the only one working on a Sunday. The property was busy and I was impressed by her ability to multitask and take care of multiple guests simultaneously. They have great deals, their staff is nice and the first day I offloaded most of my three bedroom house and valuable belongings, I left my storage space open and unlocked, and staff came by locked it and unlocked it for me when I realized there was a different lock on there. They're very kind and mellow too, and very professional and polite. The light bulb in my unit was out and even though I'm an electrician, I understand liability insurance, so the employee had a couple of light bulbs on hand and even though it wasn't fixed, it was only because the socket itself needed to be replaced which they are doing today. The right storage unit size depends on what you plan to store and how much space you need to move around your items.
